Don’t Let Senator Graham Block Fair Trials for Terrorism Suspects

From Amnesty International USA:

Our sources tell us that any day now Senator Lindsey Graham’s appalling legislation (S. 2977) could be hitting the Senate floor. Graham’s proposal takes a back-door approach at stopping federal trials for those suspected of being involved in the September 11th terrorist attacks – instead of flat-out opposing action to move these detainees to facilities in the U.S., this legislation drains funding from the last hope we’ll have at fair September 11th trials.

If these men are guilty, then our federal courts will reach that determination. It is just wrong to cheat – and worse, even rob – them of their day in court. However, one-by-one we’re seeing the Senators we thought we could count on to uphold the rule of law, turning on those values and backing this devious proposal.

Last week, we asked you to pick up the phone and put both Senator Graham and the White House on notice that we would fight any attempt to backtrack on federal trials. Now that they’ve been warned, it’s our time to strike!

We need your help to shore up support for federal trials. There are 12 key Senators that we need to stand with us: representing New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Washington, Louisiana, Colorado, Indiana, North and South Dakota.

With their support, we can stop Graham’s legislation! Email these Senators now and urge them to stand for fair trials!

Even if you don’t live in one of these states, it is imperative that these Senators hear from you – this issue cuts to the heart of our democracy and affects us all. Of course, if you do happen to live in one of these states (or know someone who does), then we can’t do this without you!

If Senator Graham’s legislation continues to gain momentum, it will force Attorney General Eric Holder and President Obama into an impossible spot. They will have no choice but to accept military commissions as the only alternative to fair, federal trials.

And you and I both know the truth about military commissions…

  • They are a poor substitute for federal trials; devised by Senator Graham and other politicians, not the military!
  • The only things these kangaroo courts can accomplish are biased convictions and the prolonged cover-up of U.S.-sanctioned torture.
  • They don’t meet anyone’s standards for fairness – by U.S., international or U.S. military standards. In fact, they wholly undermine the international human rights framework!

It only takes a moment to fight back against the insanity!

Send an email to these 12 key Senators and tell them how important they are in our fight to protect fair, federal trials and human rights for all!

Rethinking Afghanistan

With news that Obama will soon announce his decision regarding U.S. strategy and troop levels in Afghanistan, there has been much discussion among Americans recently about whether or not it makes sense to continue spending money and losing lives on a war effort that is widely regarded as a strategic failure.  Despite the fact that there was great public support for sending the military in to Afghanistan at first (unlike Iraq), the support has dwindled over the years and President Obama is now under considerable pressure to pull our troops out.  While the war effort in Afghanistan was seen as a “just” war in the beginning, our inability to meet our objective of taking out Al-Qaeda leadership (especially Osama bin Laden) along with our involvement in the Tillman cover-up and our support of what some consider a corrupt puppet government has further eroded the legitimacy of the cause.  With the U.S. economy still in crisis, Americans are understandably focused on domestic issues.  Can we afford to keep spending billions of dollars on foreign wars but perhaps even more importantly, even if we could afford the cost, should we?  Is this important to our national security or have we made our nation less safe by engaging in these wars?  I think that in the aftermath of 9/11, most Americans were so shocked and angry that they were willing to justify almost any military action that they thought might harm the perpetrators or keep us safe in the future.  Now that some time has passed and we’ve had a chance to reflect on the situation, I think most of us realize that we need to take a more measured and sensible approach.  To help understand the situation in Afghanistan, I recommend a documentary called Rethink Afghanistan produced by Brave New Films.  The entire full-length documentary has been released in segments online and it includes interviews with experts from the U.S., Afghanistan, and Russia who explain the complex issues surrounding U.S. involvement in the region in addition to interviews with locals on the ground in Afghanistan.  It is a powerful film that should be required viewing for all citizens and policymakers.

Tell President Obama: Repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

Tell President Obama: Keep your promise to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is a ridiculous policy.  For the military to dismiss well-trained, highly qualified candidates solely on the basis of their sexual orientation is not only senseless but even worse than that, is likely to weaken our military and make us all less safe.  During his campaign, President Obama repeatedly expressed his support for repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” but now that he’s in office, he’s declining to intervene in the dismissal of any of the military members with cases currently pending.  We can’t allow this failed policy to claim any more good military service members as casualties – speak out and let President Obama know that we expect him to honor his promise and do the right thing.

Charles Karel Bouley on religion and torture

Charles Karel Bouley: The Majority of Muslims Who Attend Mosque Weekly Feel Torturing For Their Cause Is Just**

I love this piece by Charles Karel Bouley in the Huffington Post about the recent Pew Forum study on the correlation between religiosity and support of torture.  I’ve never considered myself a religious person but I do have more than a passing familiarity with the Bible, having put in some time both in Catholic school and Protestant Sunday School, and it has always struck me as incongruous that it is very often the people who are the most vocal about their religious beliefs who are the most righteously judgmental about the morals of others.   While I don’t subscribe to any particular religious belief (if pressed to categorize myself, I suppose I’d call myself a secular humanist with an interest in Buddhism), I do have a strong value system and try my best to live according to these values.  My moral code is pretty simple: treat others as you’d like to be treated and be a good person who does what you can to help others and make the world a better place.  In my eyes, torture is an immoral act – plain and simple.  The fact that people who call themselves Christians and rail about the perceived decline of moral values in the United States could justify the use of torture is mind-boggling to me.  I believe that Christian conservatives have lost their moral compass and strayed dangerously far from the basic tenets of their religion.  They are using religion as a justification for an agenda that is often homophobic, racist, and misogynistic.  I think Jesus would be appalled at the course many of his followers have chosen and what they are doing in his name.  We need to call them on their hypocrisy every chance we get.
