Recommended Fragrance: Angel by Thierry Mugler

Angel Excessive Super Star Limited Edition

Angel Excessive Super Star Limited Edition

Ever since I first discovered it several years ago, Angel by Thierry Mugler has been my favorite fragrance. The scent is a unique blend of earthy and sweet undertones: in fact, its launch marked the beginning of an entirely new fragrance category that came to be known as the “oriental gourmands”. Angel combines such diverse notes as honey, chocolate, caramel, bergamot, vanilla, patchouli and berries in to an intoxicating and sensual fragrance that, despite its complexity, is never overpowering and is still light enough for almost any occasion. I consistently get more compliments when I’m wearing Angel than when I’m wearing any other fragrance.

Angel was the first product developed as a result of a partnership between French fashion designer Thierry Mugler and French cosmetics and skincare giant Clarins. While the partnership has since released several other fragrances for both men and women, Angel remains the most popular fragrance in the collection and it is currently available in a dizzying array of forms including lotions, body oils, hand creams, deodorants, hair mist and more. While the idea of layering oneself in a multitude of Angel-scented products is definitely appealing, my favorite form of the fragrance remains the Eau de Parfum in the refillable Shooting Star bottle. Angel is in fact available in a variety of uniquely designed bottles, all of which look lovely when displayed on your vanity.

If you haven’t yet experienced Angel, you owe it to yourself to try it. The Thierry Mugler online boutique currently has a special offer on a limited edition Shooting Star bottle of Angel that comes with a limited edition lipstick and free shipping for $75. As an added bonus, all online orders come with your choice of two complimentary samples and on occasion may include specially selected surprise gifts as well. Whether you’re treating yourself or choosing the perfect gift, Angel is sure to delight any woman who wears it.

Dr. Martens on Sale at Shoebuy.com

Dr. Martens Double Strap Mary Janes

Dr. Martens Double Strap Mary Janes

I love Doc Martens. Besides the fact that they remind me of my misspent youth, they are exceptionally well-made and comfortable shoes. I have a pair of Double Strap Mary Janes identical to the ones currently on sale at Shoebuy.com and even though I’ve had them for well over a decade and have worn them countless times, they still look almost as good as new and are every bit as comfortable as they were the first time I put them on. When my son was younger, I used to buy him adorable little Doc Martens and even though he played hard in them, they always looked nearly new when he outgrew them. My husband still has Doc Martens that he’s owned since he was a teenager and they’re still in good enough shape that he’s been able to pass them on to our son, who is now a teenager himself. The bottom line is that these shoes are virtually indestructible. Shoebuy.com has a huge selection of Dr. Martens for men, women, and children – many of which are currently on sale – and they also offer free shipping (even on returns!), no sales tax, and a 100% price guarantee. If you are a fan of Doc Martens like I am, this is a great opportunity to stock up. Remember: they’re not just a fashion statement, they’re an investment!

Recommended Cosmetics: For Lips

Soap & Glory's Sexy Motherpucker Lip Gloss

Soap & Glory's Sexy Motherpucker Lip Gloss

I like a soft, natural look for lips and I tend to be picky about the texture and feel of any products I put on my lips. For every day use, one of my favorite products is Soap & Glory’s Sexy Motherpucker Lip Gloss in Nude. Besides having a clever name, this product gives you a lovely natural look without being too shiny. You feel a slight tingle when applying it due to the plumping agents but fortunately the sensation doesn’t last long. The product is reasonably priced ($9.99 each or $24.99 for a set of three different colors) and easy to find at most Target locations. The only downside is that the product is a little stickier than I would prefer…but it looks so good on that I’m willing to overlook that.

e.l.f.s Mineral Lipstick in Royal Red

e.l.f.'s Mineral Lipstick in Royal Red

If you’re looking for more color or if you prefer a creamier lipstick, e.l.f.’s Mineral Lipstick is an excellent choice. These lipsticks offer beautiful natural pigments in a long wearing and moisturizing formula that glides on smoothly and feels great. My favorite shades are Prime Plum and Royal Red, both of which go on much lighter than they look in the tube. At only $5 each, you can’t beat the price for a lipstick of this quality. The company has also just introduced a new line of Mineral Lip Glosses which look quite promising but I haven’t had a chance to try yet. They are offered in six different shades at only $3 each – I’ll try them soon and report back on how well they compare to the lipstick. Another great product from e.l.f. that I use regularly is their Therapeutic Conditioning Lip Balm. This balm is a lifesaver if your lips have a tendency to dry out and crack easily. Available in four different scents (my favorite is Vanilla Creme) at only $1 each, you can easily afford to try them all and stock up on your favorites.

Recommended Cosmetics: For Eyes

Now that I have finally launched my new Beauty page, I will be publishing reviews and recommendations of some of my favorite products.  Here’s the first of what I hope will be many installments in this series:

stila eye shadow pan in kittenFor daytime, I like a nice neutral shade on the eye. I have blue eyes so I find that light pinks work especially well at complementing my eye color. One of my favorite eye shadows is stila’s eye shadow pan in Kitten, which is described as a shimmering nude pink. Apparently I’m not alone in my enthusiasm for this shade – Allure Magazine gave it their Editor’s Choice Award for Best Beige Eye Shadow in 2008. This eye shadow goes on smoothly and wears exceptionally well – in fact, I’ve been amazed at how well it holds up after a full day in the desert heat. At $18, this product is a little pricy but fortunately a little bit of the shadow goes a long way.

e.l.f.s Smokey Eye Set

e.l.f.'s Smokey Eye Set

Another excellent choice for eye color is e.l.f.’s mineral eyeshadow collection. For daytime, I like Sweet (a light shimmery pink) or Elegant (a light shimmery tan) – and at only $3 each, you can afford to stock up on several of their gorgeous shades. For a more dramatic or evening look, I like their Smokey Eye set, which includes three different shades of mineral eyeshadow as well as two brushes and coordinating eyeliner for only $12. Speaking of eyeliners, e.l.f. has some great choices for eyeliner as well. Their new Studio line includes an excellent Eyeliner & Shadow Stick, which features a gel liner that glides on smoothly and has excellent staying power. I’m less fond of the shadow side of the stick but for only $3, you can’t go wrong with this product even if you end up using only the liner. The shades I’ve tried are brown/basic and black/smoke – both of which are excellent staples that complement a wide variety of shadows. Another favorite eyeliner is stila’s kajal eye liner, which may very well be the silkiest, smoothest eyeliner I’ve ever used. This product glides on with ease and wears exceptionally well – the only downside is the price ($18) and the fact that it doesn’t last quite as long as I’d like. My favorite shade is Tiger’s Eye, a versatile deep brown that goes well with almost anything.

I’m not a daily user of mascara but when I do use it, I like either stila’s major lash mascara ($8.50) or e.l.f.’s Waterproof Lengthening & Volumizing Mascara ($3) from their new Studio line.

Product Review: FRS Healthy Energy

Since I was diagnosed with lupus in 2004, the most persistent and debilitating symptom I’ve experienced has been chronic fatigue.  In an attempt to alleviate this relentless symptom, I’ve tried just about every product on the market that claims to boost energy.  Pre-packaged drinks, vitamins, supplements, powders – at some point or another, I’ve tried them all and unfortunately, I haven’t had much success.  Despite all the disappointments, I’ve felt compelled to keep trying new products in an attempt to find something (anything!) that will bring even just a little bit of relief.

I was going through a particularly difficult flare with more severe fatigue than usual when I first came across some ads for FRS Healthy Energy.  I checked the site out but I was skeptical: the ads seemed to indicate that the product was geared towards athletes (which I’m certainly not!) and I’m generally cautious about signing up for “free” trials so I didn’t sign up right away.  As my fatigue continued to worsen, however, I decided to give the product a try -  but given all of my past disappointments, I wasn’t expecting much.

The first package I received from FRS contained their FRS Concentrate in Low Calorie Orange flavor, FRS Chews in Pomegranate-Blueberry, and FRS Powder in Orange.  I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of the orange drinks, both concentrate and powder.  Most energy drinks I’ve tried have a taste that ranges from somewhat unpleasant to downright horrid but I actually enjoyed the taste of FRS, which reminded me of watered down orange juice.  I was less impressed with the taste of the chews but I appreciated their convenience – it was easy to stash a bag of chews in my purse for a little pick-me-up while on the go.

Finding that the products were palatable was a good first step but the important question still remained:  would they help boost my energy level?  I didn’t notice anything right away and was about to write off my experience with FRS as yet another failed experiment when suddenly I noticed a bit of a difference.  Usually when I am in the middle of a bad flare, I don’t have the energy to make it through the day and often end up napping in the late afternoon.  To my surprise, after using FRS for a few days I was able to forgo the afternoon nap.  Simple activities that usually left me exhausted (grocery shopping, vacuuming, yard work, etc.) were more manageable.  I felt a bit better overall.  It wasn’t a miraculous total recovery but there was definitely a noticeable difference.

Even after experiencing some success with FRS, I still remained skeptical.  What if the improvement was coincidental?  Maybe I was already coming out of the flare when I started using FRS – if that was the case, then FRS would have nothing to do with my increased energy levels.  How could I be sure that there was a direct correlation between using this product and having more energy?  I concluded that the only way to know would be to continue the experiment.

Over the next couple of months, I kept track of how I was feeling when I used FRS and how I felt when I wasn’t using it.  During this time, I also tried other flavors of FRS but I quickly learned that the Orange flavor is by far my favorite.  Time and time again, I noticed that my energy levels were higher when I used FRS.

Now satisfied that it is actually helping, I continue to use FRS concentrate once or twice a day.  I mix it with water in a SIGG bottle that I keep by my side at all times and I generally don’t drink anything but water or the FRS mix.  Using FRS hasn’t eliminated my fatigue altogether but it has made it easier for me to get through my more difficult days and to me, that’s certainly worth it.   Whether you’re struggling with chronic fatigue or could just use a little extra boost of energy now and then, I’d definitely recommend giving the product a try.

I want a Peapod!

How is this for adorable?  If you are looking for an affordable and eco-friendly way to get around town, check out the Peapod Neighborhood Electric Vehicle.  With a range of approximately 30 miles on a single charge, room for 4 passengers, built-in docking station for your iPod or iPhone, and a starting price of only $12,500, the Peapod has something for everyone.  If you’re like me, most of your daily driving is local so the 30 mile range would be no problem.  Slightly more problematic is the maximum operating speed of 35 mph but even so, the Peapod would be an excellent choice for errands around town.  It couldn’t completely replace a standard vehicle but I’m thinking that if I had a Peapod, I could use it for the vast majority of my driving and cut my standard vehicle usage down to no more than 1 or 2 days a week.  It’s a great way to do something good for the environment and it’s adorable too…a win-win situation!
