Lifeline: Amazing, incredibly moving video

From the AFL-CIO:

You need to watch this video. It made us furious, and it made us cry.

It’s a powerful reminder of the real faces behind unemployment statistics. It’s about three minutes and it’s worth every second—so I hope you’ll turn up your speakers and watch the whole thing.

The same senators who are fighting to charge $700 billion in tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires to our national credit card say extending unemployment is “too expensive” and “must be paid for.” Meanwhile, more than one person a second is losing his or her lifeline.

If this video doesn’t fuel your outrage and give you a sense of the human cost of delay on emergency unemployment, nothing will.

Please watch and send a strong message to your members of Congress. Tell them to restore unemployment insurance benefits for jobless workers who are being cut off right now at the rate of more than one a second.

Then, share this video with your friends and ask them to take action, too.

Let’s fix this outrage.

Ask the DOJ not to defend “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

From Courage Campaign:

Judge Virginia Phillips ordered the military to immediately suspend and discontinue any investigation, discharge, separation, or other proceeding that may have been commenced under the DADT. Barring a stay by a higher court, the injunction suspends all investigations and prevents all discharges under the policy.

Now, Attorney General Eric Holder and the Justice Department have a choice: fight the decision or let it stand. If they choose not to appeal the injunction, it will move “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” one step closer to the dustbin of history

http://www.couragecampaign.org/DontDefendDADT

The short petition to Attorney General Holder says:

I respectfully write to request that the Department of Justice (DOJ) refrain from appealing the federal district court injunction in Log Cabin Republicans v. United States, following the court decision declaring the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) law unconstitutional.

The leaders of our nation’s armed forces understand that DADT serves no purpose in the laws of our nation; it is time for the DOJ to stop defending this law.

If Attorney General Eric Holder takes leadership, he can help the Obama Administration make history, joining a federal court in the judgement that discrimination — especially against those willing to take a bullet for their country — is un-American.

Together, we will end this discrimination in our nation’s military once and for all. Thank you.

Stop the BP bailout

From Firedoglake:

BP wants you to foot the bill for their oil disaster. If we don’t act quickly, BP will only have to pay the first $75 million in cleanup and damages. I can’t imagine some of the people whom I’ve met paying to clean up the very same oil that cost them everything.

The Senate is considering doing away with the liability cap for companies like BP whose irresponsibility destroys American livelihoods. This will ensure BP is held accountable for any and all damages that result from this tragedy.

Join us in signing our petition to the Senate, demanding they eliminate the liability cap and make BP pay every penny.

Tell the Senate you don’t want your tax dollars bailing out BP. Sign our petition to the Senate to eliminate the liability cap for big oil companies.

Thank Majority Leader Reid for standing up against clinic violence

Anti-choice fringe groups make a daily practice of stalking abortion providers outside their homes, picketing clinics, and verbally assaulting clinic staff and patients alike. A year ago this Monday, that systematic harassment led to the shocking murder of Dr. George Tiller at his church in Kansas.

You and I know that providers and patients should never be targets of violence. That’s why yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Reid honored Dr. Tiller’s memory by speaking out against clinic violence.

Please thank Sen. Reid for taking a stand and honoring Dr. Tiller’s memory: http://bit.ly/aDiuTY

Confirm Kagan quickly!

From the National Partnership for Women and Families:

Justice matters. Supreme Court justices deliberate every day on issues that affect the quality of our lives. And they are the gatekeepers of our fundamental rights, including equal justice and privacy.

Elena Kagan gets it. That’s why we’re so pleased with President Obama’s decision to nominate Solicitor General Kagan as the next Supreme Court justice. She is supremely intelligent and eminently qualified.

Kagan has had a distinguished career as a law school professor, the first female Dean of Harvard Law School, and our nation’s first female Solicitor General. She also has a proud history of public service, a fair and thoughtful approach to legal issues, a record of extraordinary accomplishment, and a history of working effectively with people who hold diverse political and legal views.

The Senate already recognized this when confirming her — with bipartisan support — as Solicitor General just one year ago. Urge them to now confirm her as the fourth female Supreme Court justice!

Kagan has dedicated her life to seeking justice in our society. As a Supreme Court justice, she can continue that work at the highest level.

Please tell your Senators to confirm Kagan quickly!

Urge the Senate to Confirm Goodwin Liu

From NARAL Pro-Choice America:

President Obama has nominated Goodwin Liu – a firm believer in the constitutional right to privacy – to serve on the federal courts.

Prof. Liu was a vocal critic of John Roberts’ nomination to serve as chief justice, and said of Roberts: “What we already know from Roberts’s record is cause for concern. His legal career is studded with activities unfriendly to civil rights, abortion rights, and the environment.”

Prof. Liu’s nomination is good news for women’s freedom and privacy and the future of Roe v. Wade – which means that anti-choice politicians are up in arms. Anti-choice politicians like Sens. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) are trying to obstruct Prof. Liu’s confirmation.

We are proud to join with our sister organization, the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, in supporting this nomination. Help us see Prof. Liu confirmed – contact your senators now.
